The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to question particular calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
