The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard body horror, but inside Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
