The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
