Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
