The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.
"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
